Flamencos en Route
àMiró
àMiró is Brigitta Luisa Merki’s second piece created for her choreography cycle “Spanish Painters”.
In 2015 the pictorial dance cycle successfully premiered with a showing of the choreography “Ritual & Secreto”, dedicated to the portraits of women by Francisco Zurbarán and the music of the period.
In her creation àMiró the choreographer immerses herself in the picturesque, yet poetic world of the painter Joan Miró. The latter is appreciated both as a painter and a poet. His own visual world is full of emotion and releases fantastic and mysterious symbols. It is the combined images of dance, painting and poetry that gave the poetry- and art-loving choreographer the inspiration for her new dance poem àMiró. Dance, visual impressions and poetry form a multi-faceted, secret pact. The dance moves expressed live and breathe the abstract poetry of Miró’s imagery. All three art forms, dance, poetry and visual art share a structural commonality, namely rhythm, which represents a formal element in all three. The playful rhythm of Miró’s symbolic visual language and the touch of magic and whimsicalness in his painting are closely related to the mystique of the dance. The fragmentation, the symbolism of Miró’s imagery are reflected in the dance moves of this choreography. The reductive approach brings the essence and the concentration of the expressive dance to the foreground.
The musical concept emerged and developed from Flamencos en route’s most recent musical creation. The experienced musical ensemble, which has performed with the dance company for many years keeps exploring traditional forms and sounds of Spanish music. These have proven to be an inexhaustible source. At the same time, Merki looks for new musical connections to poetry, connections like the ones she already successfully integrated in her production “haiku flamenco”.
