“Il primo miracolo di Gesù bambino” (i.e. “The First Miracle of Baby Jesus” in Italian) is one of the most famous jokes in “Mistero Buffo”, the masterpiece play by Dario Fo and Franca Rame brought back to the stage by Matthias Martelli and directed by Eugenio Allegri. The first miracle recounts the emigration of Jesus and his family from Bethlehem, following Herod’s massacres of the innocent, and how little Jesus manages to be accepted by the children of another town by inventing the miracle of little birds made out of clay. A hilarious jest on the highly topical issues of emigration, work and integration built on the inimitable comic and grotesque paradox of Fo’s theater that in the end leaves minds boiling, joy in the heart and a smile on the lips.
