A school director, who will soon retire, offers his job to a pious and reserved teacher who lives in a rural area. But before he can earn the job, he has to undergo a scrupulous and tough exam, which will be conducted by the Study Commission, which consists of the Head of the Department of Education, the Prior of the local monastery and a philanthropic countess.

The only goal of the examination is to prove the absolute moral integrity and irreproachable behaviour of the teacher, who therefore needs to hide or limit the flaws that promptly occur during the exam. Among these are the rusticity of his wife; the intrusiveness of his mother; the shameless behaviour of an admirer; the ineptitude of the two housekeepers, that he finally picked up in order to make them look like his servants.

In a crescendo of subterfuges, stopgaps and misunderstandings, someone hidden and unexpected will help the teacher out.
